This customized process allows for very efficient tooth movement tailored to your specific orthodontic needs while minimizing the amount of appointments needed to achieve a specific treatment goal.

Who is a candidate for Incognito™ braces?

In short, just about anyone. Chances are if you are a candidate for regular braces, you are candidate for Incognito braces. Men, women, tennagers, adults, professionals and people from age 13 to over 60 have worn Incognito™ braces.

How does the process work?

The first step after the consultation will be to take a series of records which includes photographs, x-rays, and highly accurate set of dental impressions. These dental impressions will be sent to 3M who will set up and manufacture your Incognito™ braces using CAD-CAM technology, wire bending robots, and a high tech production process all according to your orthodontist's specific treatment goals.

Once the manufacturing process is complete, the 100% customized brackets and wires are sent to your orthodontist's office for placement. Attaching the braces is done via an indirect bonding protocol where all of the brackets are fixed to your teeth simultaneously in a customized placement tray for precise alignment. After bracket placement, wires are inserted and treatment begins. You will need to return to your orthodontist at regular intervals for short adjustment appointments as prescribed by your doctor until treatment completes.

Are Incognito™ braces uncomfortable since they are on the back side of teeth?

Incognito™ braces are about 1/3 the size of traditional lingual braces so speech interference is minimal and comfort is maximized. Modern CAD-CAM technology has allowed 3M to make the size of the braces much smaller and more comfortable than lingual braces of the past. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that Incognito braces have been used to treat many people in the public eye where speech is as important as aesthetics. These include news reporters and even some of the famed Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

However, this is not to say that there is not some discomfort initially for the first one to two weeks as your mouth gets adjusted to a new appliance. This process is normal and your mouth will become adjusted to your new braces over time. Incognito™ discomfort levels are very comparable to traditional braces, and generally comfort is NOT much an issue for most patients.

I have been told I need tooth extractions or surgery- can this be done with Incognito™ braces?

Yes. In general, if it can be done with traditional braces it can be done with Incognito braces. We have experience with extraction cases, combined surgical-orthodontic cases, and many others with Incognito™.
